How pass the phone works
- Enter the names and rules at the top. The draw is made immediately.
- Press Pass the phone.
- The first person taps their own name, confirms, and sees who they are buying for, with the budget and note.
- They press Hide and pass on. The screen goes back to the name list, where their name is marked as seen.
- Pass the device on until every name is marked.
Nobody, including the organiser, sees anyone else’s pairing.
Tips for a smooth reveal
- Turn the screen brightness down a little and hold the phone close.
- Tell people to tap their own name carefully. A confirm step appears so a wrong tap can be undone before anything is shown.
- If someone forgets, they can tap their name again. It is still marked seen, but shows the same result.
- Do not reload the page between reveals: the draw is only in memory and a reload makes a new one.
- Prefer paper? Use Print slips from the same screen.
After each person sees their name, the Need a gift idea? button suggests a general idea, and Secret Santa gift ideas by budget lists them all.
What the organiser can and cannot see
If the organiser only uses pass the phone and never presses “Show or copy all”, they see their own pairing only. The tool cannot stop a determined person from peeking at someone else’s reveal, so this relies on people looking away. For printed alternatives and remote groups, see Secret Santa without email.
Questions people ask
What if someone taps the wrong name?
A confirm screen asks “Are you …?” before showing anything. Choose “No, go back” to return to the list.
Can people look at their result again?
Yes. Tap your own name again and reveal. Names marked seen can be opened again.
Does the phone need internet while passing it round?
Once the page is loaded, no. The draw and reveal run on the device. Do not reload the page, though.
Can I use a laptop or tablet instead?
Yes, any device with a browser works the same way. A phone is just easiest to pass around.
